Its the name that throws you off….its a very local variety available at most places in India. Has a range of names too….maybe a google search would help

In reply to elsonsequeira. I know, can totally understand that curiosity factor. And to think we were talking of Pakistani food just a few days ago. I usually slit the fish but this one was too small and I was afraid cutting too deep. And really need to buy a good knife for such fiddly fish!

Honestly, I too am curious to know what happens on the other side of the border. Agreed the food is awesome and so are the people. I too met quite a few Pakistanis and made some good friends.
As far as this recipe goes, its seems a good take on the deep fried version…. One suggestion if i may, it would be a good idea to gently give the fish 2 small slits on each end. so that helps the spices go through on the flesh
